Dato’ Dr. Muhamad is currently the Vice President Academic, Universiti Sains islam Malaysia (USIM). He obtained his Ph.D in Business Adminstration from Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, United Kingdom (1994), and a Master in Business Admintration (MBA) (1984) and Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) (1979) from the United States. He also has a Diploma in Banking (UiTM, 1977) and obtained a Certificate in Advanced Bank Management (Asian Institute of Management (AIM), Manila, Phillipines – 1980).
He has been an academia for over 25 years, starting with the National University of Malaysia (UKM) and currently, with USIM (formerly KUIM). He is also the founding Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Muamalat, USIM. In UKM, he had held the post of the Dean of the Faculty of Business Management, Deputy Dean (Students Affairs) and Head of the Finance Department. Prior to joining the academia, he was Banking Officer and Money Market Officer at two reputable merchant banks in Kuala Lumpur.
He has vast experience in the Islamic banking industry, having sat on the Board of Directors in BIMB Holdings Berhad (1997-2005), a company listed in the KLSE, and also in its wholly-owned subsidiary Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (1996 – 2005). During the tenure in BIMB Group, he also chaired or sat as member of the various board’s committees including the Risk Management Committee, Remuneration Committee, Internal Audit Committee, and Search Committee. He was instrumental in the setting-up and organizing the risk management framework and department in the Bank. He had also sat on the Investment Committee of a state unit trust company (total funds RM130 mil.) and the National Council for the Coordination of Baitulmal and had acted as Chairman of the KUIMKoop, a cooperative organization for the University staff.
He has written a number of books and journal articles, and has presented more than 60 working papers in conferences and seminars, locally and overseas. In USIM, Dr. Muhamad was instrumental in the establishment of the Faculty of Economics and Muamalat (FEM) and the introduction of the degree programmes in Islamic Economics and Muamalat Administrations.
Besides teaching and supervising research at the University – both at the graduate and undergraduate level, he is also actively involved in consultancy projects, as well as facilitating seminars and training in the public and private sectors. He is a sought after speaker in corporate valuation and personal financial planning and investments, and strategic management. He is also an expert in case writing. His main research interest is in banking, investments and financial services, particularly on the strategic planning and implementation pursued by the financial institutions and SMEs. His latest projects are in corporate management cases, risk management and product structuring in Islamic banking, personal financial planning and the socio-economic change among Malaysians.
